Start for the new campus
The university hospital of Schleswig-Holstein in association with Christian-Albrechts-University (CAU) is planning comprehensive restructuring of its hospital area on the Kiel site. For the “Campus for research and teaching” measure, which creates additional, centralised research and teaching areas for medicine, the new build represents the first building block. Because of its exposed position, it forms the start of the new campus; a subsequent, second construction phase will continue the urban edges and height development.

The new build sees itself as a generic laboratory building; it will house biochemical laboratories for research groups that are still to be defined. Modifiable functional units that can be combined flexibly are designed for this on the upper floors and these are respectively connected with office areas. An open stairway with adjoining communication zones connects the office and laboratory areas with the meeting and seminar rooms on the lower floors and aids interdisciplinary exchange.
