Laboratory of short distances
In the urban, heterogeneous environment of the university campus, the new research building with its long front closes the “Gründerzeit” block edge structure and creates new visual connections in the district. The clear building is characterised by a strictly structured façade and constructed with largescale recesses and closed façade areas. To protect the measuring instruments for nanoscales, which are sensitive to vibrations, it rests on an extremely rigid, 1.60 m thick, reinforced concrete floor slab.

The usage concept follows the idea of short distances: offices and laboratories are arranged opposite each other; between them the communication areas and secondary functions are fitted, without having to forego a line of sight. The rhythm of the work areas is interrupted in two places in the building by two-storey common rooms with a gallery, so-called “knowledge gardens”. For the scientists, these are a visual and content contrast to concentrated work in the laboratory.
